Friday Roy had his surgery, so we spent a lot of time waiting to be called in. Finally he did get called in and was prepped. I sat with him until he went into surgery. Since it was knee surgery and he’d done it before, we were both pretty chill about the entire thing.
I had been sitting in the waiting room while he was being prepped and it was driving me insane. First of all, it felt like EVERYONE around me was eating something. How odd! This is an outpatient surgery place where most people wait, all told, less than 90 minutes. Seriously you have to EAT something in that 90 minutes? On top of the constant chip bag rattling and the crunching, there was LITTER everywhere. Litter. One would think that grown adult members of our society would know how to use a garbage can. I guess they all believe they have a personal maid following them around.
So as soon as he went in, I went out for a run. The weather was nice, and while the route isn’t beautiful it was at least outside. I popped in my ear buds and dialed in one of my favorite podcasts, “Fitness Rocks.” In it he was talking about a study that studied the impact of lifestyle on Type II Diabetes. One of the newer stats for the US is that 1 in 4…let me repeat that one in four adults in the US has Type II aka Adult Onset Diabetes. It is estimated that 90% or more of those cases are 100% preventable as it is directly linked to a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and an unhealthy diet.
So it was ironic that when I made it back into the waiting room I looked around and noticed that I was wrong before. It wasn’t everyone who was eating. It was, however, almost everyone in the room who would be classified as obese. And they weren’t munching on carrot sticks. One lady was on her second bag of chips (I ran 3 miles). Another was sipping a venti frapuccino (those top around 900 calories for a drink). Another had a candy wrapper beside her. NO, I wasn’t intentionally taking inventory, but in light of what I’d just heard it just stood out at me.
The truth is, there but for the grace of God and Weight Watchers and a lot of personal drive, would be I. I could easily be headed down that path. I just wanted to take all of them in my arms and say “You are so much MORE than this habit of eating” because I guarantee that probably NONE of them were truly hungry. They were eating out of boredom because there was nothing to do while their loved one had minor surgery. Or maybe it was stress, or habit, or entertainment. All of them reasons why we eat. None of them valid reasons TO eat.
And don’t even get me STARTED on the number of people hacking and coughing in there…yes, it was a doctor’s office, but not a GP.
Unfortunately I did NOT take a photo today! I was way too preoccupied with Roy’s surgery and other issues, but I do have this to entertain you. This was my route:

Run: North Everett
Mileage: 3.15
Time: 34.59 (almost embarrassing)
Blessing: Getting out of a crowded waiting room.
